ARTIST’S STATEMENT: I am currently moving back and forth between representational (en Plein Air) landscape painting and abstract paintings. Having been a non-representational/abstract painter for over 20 years I was drawn back to the landscape during the pandemic. Noting the therapeutic power of the land to put everything into a grounded perspective of reality, I appreciate the quality of its healing nature, its calm presence giving an escape from this worried world. Initially my Orbit Series (GALLERY 1) was inspired through an amalgamation of Pure Psychic Automatism/Andre Breton’s Manifestoes of Surrealism in the sense of “Automatic Drawing”, juxtaposed with the current scientific, theoretical physicist’s writings of Carlo Rovelli in his book, The Order of Time. My ideas change as I explore new techniques and thoughts. In the simplest of terms, my “Orbit Series” paintings are an exploration of my ideas about Art, Time and Astronomy into a visual experience. In my landscape paintings (GALLERY 2) the connections to New York State and the Hudson River School of art are apparent. I have been influenced by painters such as George Innis, Sanford Gifford and Asher B. Durand among others. During my travels and hikes around the Catskills, the Mohawk-Hudson regions, the Adirondacks, and the Outer Cape of Cape Cod each place is a reminder of the sublime power and the beauty of being in the moment with the land, water and sky. Growing up in Woodstock, NY in the 60’s and 70’s I was exposed to the world of art from the age of 4. The main influences back then were my father's abstract painting collection and the folk music of his partner, Sonya Malkine whose husband, Georges Malkine was a famous French Surrealist artist. My closest childhood friend’s great aunt also collected Woodstock artists’ works which were displayed around their unique home.
